72 Hours in and Around Sarajevo

Spend the first and third day in Sarajevo doing everything outlined in the 24 hour and 48 hour itineraries. Take that middle day and do a day trip out from the city and, of course, choose it based on your preferences (and the season). You could even head out of town late on the first day and overnight somewhere so that you can get off to an early start.

Some trips will take the whole day, other activities can be combined. Here are some suggestions:

  • A day trip to Mostar by train (will take you the whole day), taking in the bridge and with lunch in the Old town. If you rent a car, you should also stop for spit roast lamb in Jablanica on the way back at one of the spots by the road. You could also squeeze in Blagaj Tekija and Medugorje.

  • Rent a car and head out to Tito's Bunker for some Yugo-nostalgia and then stop at Boraćko Jezero on the way back for a wild swim (in the summer).

  • If you prefer the outdoors, consider a hike to Lukomir or a hike to the top of Mt. Trebević.

  • If you're into something a bit more obscure, you could check out the 'pyramids' at Visoko. You could then head on to Bobovac for some nature and a bit of 'old' Bosnia.
  • You could head east to the Srebrenica memorial and then head to Višegrad after and see the bridge on the Drina.
  • It's a push, but if you start early enough, you could go rafting or canyoning. The closest option would be in Konjic, but you could also head to Sutjeska national park and raft there. If you head to Sutjeska to raft, make sure you check out the Tjentište spomenik.
  • If you happen to be there in winter (Feb and March are best; December and January can be hit and miss, but check the snow cams), hit the slopes. Jahorina is the best ski resort.

Some places are still too far out of reach for a day trip. I would think twice about heading to Neum, Bihać, Počitelj, or Trebinje, for example (not to say that it can't be done if you start early enough, but it would be a heavy day). This places are ideal if you are road tripping through the region and heading onto Croatia, for example, or if you have more time in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
