From many perspectives, Sarajevo is a town, not a city. From others, the opposite is true. In either case, you will find plenty of ways to fill your evenings over a long weekend or during a short week.

If you like a drink, beer, wine, and rakija are all produced in Bosnia and there are plenty of bars where you can sample them. The town has a few venues and clubs where you can go for live music or a dance later in the evening too.

Shisha lounges are popular and depending on the season you’ll find a cosy courtyard or cosy couch to situate yourself in while you take a drag on the hookah pipe.

Don’t forget Sarajevo’s theatre and cinema scene, especially if you are lucky enough to be there during the Sarajevo Film Festival or Mess Festival. Cinema usually has subtitles in English; this is less likely with the theatre, though not impossible - you can always ask.

Fancy a drink? You can get a locally brewed beer for a couple of Euros (there is the well- established Sarajevo brewery as well as a number of more recently established craft beers). Bosnia produces some very good wine with a couple of grape varieties performing particularly well (Žilavka and Blatina) and you can sample them in a number of places in Sarajevo.

There are cosy, quiet places, loud places with sticky tables, and more sophisticated joints. Check out our selection of bars in Sarajevo by clicking on the link below.

Don’t fancy a drink? Or you at least don’t want the focus of your evening to be on this? Sarajevo has a small selection of cinemas and theatres where you can watch a play or a film. There's also the option of sitting down to enjoy some shisha and a coffee in one of the town's many shisha lounges/cafes which stay open late(ish).

There's even a very cool, old bowling alley that maintains its Yugo-style. Read our article for a few suggestions about how to spend your night in Sarajevo.

You can find a number of locations to listen to live music, including rock and jazz. A few clubs have other genres and have specific club nights, including some that will introduce you to balkan style clubbing, which can seem quite unique to the uninitiated. Read our intro to Bosnian music to learn a bit about it and to listen to some too.
