A City Guide for Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Climate in Sarajevo

Sarajevo has a relatively devilish climate. It can be extreme; it can also be a little unpredictable. The city falls firmly under the spell of continental meteorology: hot and humid summers (perhaps a little too hot?) and surprisingly cold winters, often with heaps of snow. In Herzegovina on the other hand, in Mostar for example, the climate is much more Mediterranean. The spring and autumn are just wonderful. Obvioulsy, you should, if you can, choose a time of year that suits your planned activities. You wouldn't try to ski in the summer. You can read more about the climate as a whole in Bosnia and Herzegovina here.

The weather in Sarajevo is relatively unpredictable. I would even say that it has the least trustworthy weather forecast I have ever exprienced (perhaps the topogrpahy of the valley Sarajevo is situated in makes it more challenging to make predictions?). A warm summer day can quickly be drowned in a downpour of lashing rain as dark clouds creep over the crest of the surrounding hilltops.

The mountains have their own climates which can be brutal for large swathes of the year, often with snow cover for over five months. Before you plan a hike you should check which months that hike is recommended during and make sure that you have appropriate clothing and supplies.

Finally, one cannot talk about the climate of Sarajevo withougt discussing the pollution: Sarajevo can be disgustingly polluted in the winter. At times it is even ranked as the most polluted city in the world. When it is very polluted it almost hurts to breath and the stench seems into your clothes and hair.

The temperature figures given are averages. I have experienced -27 degrees Celcius in Sarajevo. One winter, it didn't go above about -12 degrees Celcius for a couple of weeks. The summers can also reach highs of over 40 degrees Celcius and be very humid.

Mostar Climate

I've selected Mostar here because in many ways it is broadly representative of the portion of the country called Herzegovina, which is far more Mediterranean. As above, these temperatures are averages and can of course be higher or lower on a given day.

The Pollution

Very awful pollution in the colder months is often a disgraceful reality in Sarajevo: if the people there didn't already choose to inhale packetfuls of smoke willingly, they also have to inhale the smoke caused by a series of policy and enforcement failures.

In winter, one can go days on end without actually seeing the sky in Sarajevo and it is not due to cloud cover. In the winter a dense cloud of particles from various sources accumulates in the valley that is home to Sarajevo and reduces visibility and people's lung capacities. Sarajevo is often among the most polluted cities in the world, sometimes it is even the most polluted.

It's not just Sarajevo. Other towns in the country suffer from very high levels of pollution too, such as Tuzla and Zenica, among others.
