Budgetting in Sarajevo

It's very useful to know how much things cost when you are planning your trip. I've put some of the more common expenses down below with upper and lower ranges of what you might expect to pay for things when you are there. Of course, these are only estimates and only include the basics: I'm sure you could find ways to spend either far more or far less. In particular, accommodation prices are likely to fluctuate depending on the season and how far in advance you book.

I use BAM (the Bosnian currency, often written as KM also) because it is more accurate over the medium term than using another currency due to exchange rate fluctuations: you can convert BAM into whichever currency you use. (A rough estimate is 1 Euro = 2 BAM). I've not included flight costs, insurance costs, or other similar costs.

Item Lower estimate (BAM) Reasonable estimate (BAM) Upper estimate (BAM)
Hotel Accommodation (per night) 14 120 500
AirBnb Accommodation (per night) 20 32 390
Breakfast (per person) 2 7 15
Lunch (per person) 5 15 40
Dinner (per person) 5 15 80
Coffee (per person) 1 2 5
Alcoholic drink (each) 2 5 10
Tram (per person) 1.6 (from a kiosk) - 1.8 (from the driver)
Taxi 2.5 5 40
Bus (inter-city, per person) 10 (SJJ to Konjic) 21 (SJJ to Mostar) 45 (SJJ to Bihac)
Car rental (per day) 50 (small car) 70 (medium car) 130 (big car)
Museum entrance (per person) Free 5 12
Rafting (per person) 40 60 100
Hiking with a guide (per day) 60 100 160

Rough totals...

So, on the cheaper side, estimating for three days and two nights, with a few museums, a guided hike to Skakavac, a day trip by bus to Mostar, including all meals, and accommodation in a hostel, you could budget for 240 KM (not including flights, insurance, shopping, etc.)

If you went all out, ate like royalty, stayed in a palace, and swapped Skakavac for canyoning, you could spend up to 1,500 KM (but I very much doubt you would be able to).

A far more reasonable budget for a three day and two night trip, staying in an airbnb, eating out for every meal, stopping for a few coffees, checking out a handful of museums, visiting Mostar by bus, and hiking Trebevic with a guide, would be somewhere in the region of 450 KM.
